What's after your credits?

A recent phenomenon has been slowly taking over in big budget films the past few years. Many blockbusters have been affected, from Pirates of the Caribbean to Iron Man, and it seems to be becoming ever prevalent in the world of cinema. I speak, of course, of the after credits scene or “stinger” if you will (more detail here).
These scenes are normally short, displaying nothing more than something cool or funny or eluding to a sequel. They are harmless, and the loss one may suffer from missing it can be cured by a quick trip to IMDB. But the question remains, what’s up with these things?

The Good, The Bad, and the Disney

Disney bought Marvel Studios today for a whopping $4 billion. Does this mean the Marvel Films “logo” will become a flip-book of Disney characters? Unclear. But. There are some good things (Stan Lee liked it), some bad things, and some Disney things.

Grow Up!

Post Grad is about a girl (Alexis Bledel) who graduates from college along with her best friend (Matt Saracen/Zach Gilford). Alexis is cock-blocked from her dream job by her evil nemesis and as her life spins out of control she decides she wants the hot foreigner instead of the boy next door who worships her.
Furthermore this romantic comedy forgets both the romance and the comedy in a movie with little drama. All that’s left are predictable plotlines and cliché dialogue. And that’s being friendly. Needless to say there isn’t much action.
But with all this “review stuff” – why not just see what Ebert or Rotten Tomatoes had to say about the movie? I want to talk about the other Post Grad issues.

Blood Feud

With the latest Harry Potter movie out a few weeks ago and now the start of the blitz for the new Twilight movie there is a lot of talk about HP v. Twilight. It boils down to: 1) Harry’s maturing fans are turning to Twilight, and 2) Meyer’s Twilight writing is much better romance.
Even if Harry’s fans are reading Twilight, it’s not because Twilight is more mature, it’s much more likely that: 1) Harry’s fans are the only readers who can hold books that big and 2) there just aren’t anymore Harry books to read.
