  Grow Up!

By Aaron 8/22/2009

Post Grad is about a girl (Alexis Bledel) who graduates from college along with her best friend (Matt Saracen/Zach Gilford). Alexis is cock-blocked from her dream job by her evil nemesis and as her life spins out of control she decides she wants the hot foreigner instead of the boy next door who worships her.

Furthermore this romantic comedy forgets both the romance and the comedy in a movie with little drama. All that’s left are predictable plotlines and cliché dialogue. And that’s being friendly. Needless to say there isn’t much action.

But with all this “review stuff” – why not just see what Ebert or Rotten Tomatoes had to say about the movie? I want to talk about the other Post Grad issues.

The biggest problem I had was the message to young girls was: your man is more important than your dreams, your career, or your roots. In this day and age can’t we have more female characters like Summer who know what they want and take it?

That was a disappointment because this movie had a chance to really resonate with me because I’m a recent college graduate whose friends don’t have jobs. The movie skips over relevant dramatic opportunities (the mass amount of college grads without jobs) and comedic ones to give us a hottie with an accent and pointless montages.

But there were two reasons I saw this movie – Alexis Bledel, and Zack Gilford.

I’ve had a soft spot for Alexis for quite some time and I enjoyed her one role with teeth – Becky in Sin City. But before – and after that – Alexis has played pubescent teens that hardly seem appropriate for a woman closing in on 30. You’ve got amazing eyes Alexis, but until you grow up and take adult roles, you aren’t going to be in theatres much longer than four or five weeks.

Zach Gilford – the one bright spot for me – won my support with his performances in Friday Night Lights. Unlike Alexis, Gilford has grown up from the boy he plays on Friday Night Lights to play a character that showed depth and emotion beyond anyone else in the movie. Not to get too far ahead of myself, Gilford does play pretty close to Matt Saracen – taking his perfect boyfriend role to a whole different level. But when you’re looking for SOMETHING to glow about….
